Until now, smart lenses have relied upon complex electronics and circuitry.  These new lenses, however, allow for instrument free detection of what they describe as “pathologically relevant signals of eye diseases.”  

The result is a structurally coloured contact lens sensor with an adjustable colour.

It is hoped that the device can be used to identify those at risk from xerophthalmia and ocular hypertension.  It may even be able to identify patients who may be at risk of glaucoma.
