The main thing to remember when it comes to contact lenses is that they are an object you put in your eye. This is quite a big thing to keep in mind because if you don’t use them properly and look after them correctly you can develop further eye health issues.
Here’s a look at the main Dos and Don’ts of contact lenses:
Things that you should do
ü Wash your hands to make sure that they are clean and dry before touching your eyes or contact lenses
ü Follow advice and guidance from your optometrist, including how to wear them and how long to keep them in for
ü Remove daily lenses before you go to sleep unless you have been advised otherwise
ü Ensure to arrange regular follow-up appointments with your optometrist. Check-ups are important to make sure that lenses are still accurate
ü Always keep a pair of suitable glasses nearby if you plan on being away from home for long periods of time. This means that if your eyes become uncomfortable, you’ll have alternative eyewear to switch to
ü If you notice any strange pain or discomfort when wearing your lenses, consult your optometrist straight away
Things that you shouldn’t do
O NEVER share contact lenses with someone else. Contact lenses are prescribed for each individual and they may not be suitable for you
O NEVER use water or saliva to clean or wet your lenses. Both of these substances could potentially contain harmful bacteria
O Don’t wear daily disposable lenses more than once
O If you accidentally drop your lenses always ensure that they are debris-free and properly cleaned before using them
O Don’t use contact lenses when coming into contact with water, particularly whilst swimming. Water can get trapped and may expose your eyes to harmful bacteria
O Don’t wear contact lenses if you require the use of eye drops. Only wear them if your optometrist has confirmed that it is suitable for you to do so
