Free Eye Tests for Children

Children will rarely complain about their eyesight but there are some tell-tale signs that all is not well.

Have you noticed that your child sits a bit too close to the television? Has their teacher said they have difficulty reading the blackboard or whiteboard? Do they have a tendency to blink rapidly or are they constantly rubbing their eyes? These are all indicators of possible problems with their eyesight.

All children under the age of sixteen are entitled to free eye tests and the NHS recommends regular visits to an ophthalmic practitioner, preferably every year. In addition, all children have vision screening during their first year at school for lazy eye, to detect if they have reduced vision in either or both eyes. This is important as children may well be unaware of any problems and they are not readily visible to parents.

Obviously the earlier any problems are detected the easier they are to treat, so if there is a family history of a squint or lazy eye, do make an appointment to have the child’s eyesight checked.

Eye examinations are not painful and are carried out using age-appropriate tests and equipment. Our eye exams can pick up other health problems too, such as early symptoms of diabetes or evidence of infections.

And remember – eye test for children under sixteen are free!
