Sports Vision

With more and more of us undertaking some form of sporting activity, we all need to consider which types of eyewear are best for each occasion.

This will partly depend on the type of activity you undertake, taking into account the amount of time the sport takes, the environment in which it happens and the amount of physical contact involved.

Generally speaking, soft contact lenses are the best for sport as they move less on the eyeball than rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses. In addition, they are less likely to become dislodged. RGP lenses are entirely unsuitable for contact sports, such as rugby.

Daily disposable soft lenses are an excellent choice as they are ideal for part-time wear and are disposed of straight after use, avoiding the hassle of the cleaning and disinfecting which should be employed with re-usable lenses.

With endurance events such as mountaineering or rally driving and in environments where lens handling is not practical, lenses approved for extended or flexible wear are advisable, in which case highly oxygen-permeable silicone hydrogel lenses should be worn.

There are some sports where statutory regulations will apply. Glasses are prohibited in rugby, for example, and neither glasses nor contact lenses are allowed to be worn in amateur boxing.

In other sports, such as squash, protective eyewear is either mandatory or recommended. In addition lenses you should not use contact lenses for swimming or water sports unless wearing tight-fitting goggles over the top and even then the lenses should be discarded immediately after the activity.
